Overview
GTA VI’s dual-protagonist design is not only a story framing device. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has described how players switch between Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, how their relationship can deepen or stay professional, and how body and consumable systems track fitness separately from crime identity. This guide stays pre-release: interviews and official footage only. Release: November 19, 2026, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Do not assume GTA V’s character-switching cadence, cooldowns, or mission patterns apply unchanged. Where Nelson compared directed locks to GTA V moments, that is a design analogy—not a claim that VI copies V’s full switch rules.
Character switching: control, locks, and auto-swaps
Character Switching is an editorial name for swapping control between Jason and Lucia. Nelson confirmed players can switch to either protagonist and bring them together, but switching is not free at every moment. The uncontrolled protagonist continues a daily schedule around the hideout—linking directly to Safehouses.
Story progression can restrict switching so only one character is controllable. Some missions allow free switching; others lock a character when the team wants a specific perspective, including an early high-rise mission locked to Jason. Some missions automatically switch control, including a bank-robbery driving sequence that moves from Jason shooting to Lucia driving.
Official footage in An Extended Look shows Jason and Lucia swapping active control during gameplay—including combat and chases—without a loading screen. IGN’s Rockstar HQ recap says switching is designed to remain available as often as possible in the open world, and that you can call or text the other protagonist to come help. That summon loop is press-reported from the HQ demo, not independently timed in the Extended Look, so this guide does not treat phone summon as a first-party Rockstar-named feature.
A complete list of missions that lock or auto-switch characters is not public. Open-world cooldown, distance, or other hidden limits beyond story locks are undocumented.
Relationship system: couple path versus partners in crime
Nelson said there is a relationship system, separate from Criminal Profile. Famitsu records that players choose whether to proceed as a couple or as collaborators, and that relationship depth changes what they can do together. Most situations are built so the two have to work together; whether they do so as lovers or as accomplices is up to the player.
If the player does not engage with romance, they can progress as partners rather than lovers. If the relationship is not deepened, options such as holding hands or kissing are lost; effort can restore the relationship. A status representing the relationship, and bank balance, can be checked in-game. Nelson said the pair start wanting to give the relationship a shot, but story missions alone may not be enough to keep them together; shared open-world time matters. Shared activities he listed include exploring, playing pool, mini golf, kayaking, and committing robberies together.
IGN’s HQ recap adds reporter-observed details such as holding hands with a trigger prompt and texts about locking up the house; those are treated more cautiously than Nelson’s own wording. Rockstar has not published a first-party consumer name for the relationship UI. How far relationship state changes mission outcomes was intentionally under-described; Nelson declined to say more on that point.

Body, gym, and food: stats without San Andreas imports
Nelson said the game tracks health, cardio, and fitness statistics. Players can make a character muscular or have them eat a lot and become overweight. Base stamina and health values can be increased through training. He described a gym routine of three exercises, rest, and repeating across three days to level up health and strength. Most gym equipment can be used, including pull-ups. Protein shake and protein bar were mentioned as a post-workout beat. The playable loop lives on Gym Workouts; the broader rules on Fitness & Body System.
Food provides buffs that strengthen meters. If health falls below its normal maximum, the additional buffed amount is lost and will not recover beyond that point. Energy drinks can strengthen the stamina meter. Base stamina and health rise through training, distinct from temporary buffs. A full grocery-restock fridge system was prototyped and then simplified because it became too complicated—see Food & Buffs.
Do not import unsourced San Andreas rules (arbitrary skill lists, decay tables, or clothing gates) as GTA VI facts. Only Nelson’s described stats and activities are listed here. IGN’s HQ note that gym activity can be done solo or as a couple is press reporting of the demo.
Crime identity, carrying, and social pressure on the pair
Criminal Profile tracks professional versus violent patterns and changes world aggression; it is not a romance meter and not a shop-discount honor track. Visible long guns, Ammu-Nation lockers, and trunk storage force the couple to manage weapons while staying hidden—see Weapon Carrying & Storage. NPC height and body-shape variety is much larger than previous Rockstar games; armed civilians and carjacking resistance mean the street is not one-sided—see NPC Reactions.
Together with Heat descriptions for clothing and couple reports, these systems reinforce fugitive-pair fantasy without requiring a GTA V-style third protagonist or V’s exact switch UX.
What we still don't know
- Complete mission lock and auto-switch lists are not public.
- Whether open-world switching has cooldown or distance limits beyond story locks is undocumented.
- Exact relationship values, thresholds, and a public list of gated interactions are not published.
- How far relationship state changes mission outcomes remains intentionally under-described.
- Exact pause-menu stat names, numeric ranges, body-visibility thresholds, and decay rates are not published.
- Whether both protagonists share identical fitness rules is not fully documented.
- Phone summon of the other protagonist remains press-reported from the HQ demo rather than Extended Look–confirmed.
