Criminal Profile

Overview

Criminal Profile is the exact term used by Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson for a new GTA VI system that tracks some of the player's actions. Nelson described it as having things in common with Red Dead Redemption 2's Honor system, and also important differences. I Love Vice City treats the name as developer-confirmed, not as a first-party Rockstar website feature title.

What is confirmed

  • Nelson said GTA VI introduces, for the first time in the series, a system that tracks some player actions, and named it Criminal Profile.
  • The system evaluates what kind of criminal the player is — more professional, or more violent and dangerous — rather than a shop-discount honor meter.
  • That assessment is used to decide whether people around the player and the wider world respond more aggressively.
  • Nelson said there is no single correct way to play, and the team did not want to punish players for being 'bad'.
  • In the IGN interview, Nelson said required mission violence, robberies, and necessary self-defense are fair game; a consistent pattern of unnecessary violence is what may sway the profile.

How it appears to work

Nelson compared the idea to RDR2 Honor but rejected RDR2-style store discounts as too game-like. The intended loop is consequence, not a morality reward track: more aggressive play makes the world more aggressive in return. A jewelry-store example in the Famitsu interview distinguishes handling a messy robbery and escaping quickly from staying and fighting the police.

What is observed

  • Phase 12.1 already recorded on-screen positive feedback during world interactions in the official Extended Look. That UI is not, by itself, proof of the named Criminal Profile system.

What remains unknown

  • Rockstar has not published a public first-party glossary entry for Criminal Profile on the official GTA VI site.
  • Exact tracked dimensions, meters, or persistence across the whole campaign are not documented.
  • How much the profile changes story outcomes remains only generally described.

Evidence

Press hosts are not Rockstar. Developer-confirmed means a named Rockstar developer described the system in an attributable public interview. See Credits & Sources.
