Overview

Wanted & Heat System is an editorial name for two related, developer-described layers: classic wanted stars, and a search state Nelson called Heat. Rockstar's Extended Look shows a six-star wanted HUD. Nelson said Heat is the investigation state based on reported descriptions when police do not yet know the exact location.

What is confirmed

  • Nelson said the wanted system was overhauled: you do not automatically become wanted if nobody witnessed the crime; a witness or an alarm is required, similar to RDR2.
  • Stars do not increase easily; the team is careful about how many stars an action should receive.
  • Nelson named the search state Heat. Police investigate using clothes, appearance, and the vehicle being driven; a reported weapon can keep the player suspicious after leaving the car.
  • Police search a Heat Area. Remaining inside it keeps Heat active; leaving the area is one escape method. Returning to an already identified vehicle can put the player at risk again.
  • Changing clothes, discarding a known weapon, removing a mask, abandoning a known vehicle, and splitting up as a reported couple are described as ways to reduce matching descriptions.
  • Nelson said around two stars, escape is entirely possible with restrained play.

How it appears to work

Developer-confirmed: Heat is a named investigation state, not just a synonym for wanted stars. Officially observed in the Extended Look: six wanted-star slots at maximum heat, and HUD descriptor icons under the meter. Nelson also said Pay & Spray can repaint a car to help escape Heat, limited to a color change.

What is observed

  • Extended Look HUD visibly shows six wanted-star slots (Phase 12.1 confirmed).
  • Icons beneath the wanted meter appear to track clothing, vehicle, and group context during searches (Phase 12.1 observed; Rockstar did not name that UI in the video itself).

What remains unknown

  • Exact Heat Area size, duration, and whether memory persists indefinitely are not documented.
  • Full arrest, busted, and bail rules are not published as a complete system.
  • Whether every descriptor icon in the Extended Look matches Nelson's Heat description one-for-one is not independently frame-verified.
