Overview
Vehicle Theft is an editorial name for GTA VI's tiered stealing loop. Nelson said you can no longer press a single button to steal every parked car. Tools, alarms, trackers, and resale all add steps. Occupied cars can still be carjacked.
What is confirmed
- Players can scan a vehicle to check model/value and the cost to register it at Pay & Spray.
- Some cars can be opened with lock-picking tools; others need a key cloner obtained later. Not every parked car is accessible at the start.
- Luxury/new cars are more likely to have alarms and sophisticated trackers. Breaking a window can trigger an alarm. Driving slowly with a tracker can reveal location to police.
- Some stolen cars cannot be sold immediately; fences who can remove trackers appear later.
- Damage reduces sale value. After selling at one Pay & Spray, that location cannot take another sale for a while.
- A vehicle fence named Randy can request specific cars. Some story/friend locations are protected: Nelson said you cannot steal cars outside Dre'Quan's club.
- Nelson said any occupied car can still be carjacked. In the IGN interview he named a phone scanner and described outputs such as locked/alarm/tracker, sale value, and whether a key cloner or Slim Jim is needed. IGN reported the app name as Waink from the demo glimpse; that name is press observation, not treated here as a Rockstar-printed product name.
How it appears to work

What remains unknown
- A full public list of theft tools and vehicle tiers is not available.
- Exact tracker rules (speed thresholds, duration) are not documented.
- The on-screen app name for scanning is press-reported, not independently printed by Rockstar in first-party copy reviewed for this page.
